A Little Sun and Play

Took advantage of the spring weather to sketch outdoors. I put together a gauche palette and did a test run sketch of the garden cart in my yard. I was a little concerned that the gauche would be too hard after drying but it turns out they re-wet well. Both images were done in my Pentalic "Nature Sketch" brand sketchbook. It's a fairly heavy weight paper, 130lb and quite inexpensive. It has a nice tooth and is acid free.

Here I used Tombow Dual pens, red and black, and incorporated watercolor. This paper takes direct washes great, but doesn't stand up to scrubbing or frequent re-wetting. That's okay, it's great for experiments.

  1. Wonderful images. Such energy in the red foliage juxtaposed against the calm cool shadows on the deck. You've got new tools. I'll have to investigate!

  2. Great sketches! What kind of gouache did you use? I have lots of trouble with it crumbling in my palette after it dries and I'd love to find one that doesn't do that.

  3. Thank you for your comments, Sue and Carol!
Sue, yes, a couple new tools. I've wanted to try the Tombow pens for some time since they're water soluble. They bleed crazy. And Nature Sketch is the best cheap paper. I discovered it through a student.
Carol, I'm using Holbein. I'll see what they do over time. I read that M. Graham gauche is best for palette use because they don't dry out. Probably similar to their watercolor formulation, which stay soft.
