Getting Beat

I beat this sketch to a pulp but, frankly, I feel more beat by it. When all else fails just pound on them. But I learned some things. And have some new ideas for how I may want to handle complex backgrounds in the future.

  1. Looks fantastic to me!I love the way you handled the background. And the foreground. And the middle ground.

  2. Hey thanks. I feel like the only place for the eye to rest is the blue vertical space on the left. My favorite area!

  3. I like the tonal values you have achieved, the plant really stands out from the background. However, I do find the background distracting - sorry. I look forward to seeing your new ideas on how to tackle it.

  4. Nice commentary along with it. Mahler Ryder drawing teacher extrodinaire at RISD when I was there impressed me with adage "if you're going to bomb...BOMB BIG!" He also would say if I was turning paper over to begin again, "what makes you think you're going to get any luckier on that side Barr?"
You're right- the blue on left is eye rest, but so are the flowers resonating with that, and you know? so is the invisible "potato" that oval in front left - Magical.

  5. Thanks Sue and Candy Barr. I really appreciate your observations and comments. I have always found my redos different, not better. And the potato? Candy, I agree.

  6. I love it! It has really good contrast and depth to it! You didn't beat it to a pulp, you lost yourself in it's creation... It's wonderful!

  7. Thanks so much for your comments Katerine. And Lisbeth too. (lisbeth's didn't show up). I learned somethings, and when that happens, it's a success. Lisbeth, my eye is really attracted to patterns. Makes picture making a rather laborious process! Oh well.
