Appaloosa Sunset
Horses are magnificent animals. As a kid I drew them obsessively and today I remembered why. The angular face, elegant lines of the neck, curvilinear shapes of the torso, rump and upper legs, and the expression of weight on the ankles. Such dynamic anatomy. Always in motion, even when stationary. When I saw this Appy I had to sketch it. What artist could ask for more than a horse with spots?!
Kris!I'm just blown away by these. I might need a print of one of these. Really exciting stuff. You should do animals more often.
ReplyDeleteHey thanks! I can't say enough how exciting it was paint him. I hated leaving but the sun went down and it got chilly. Animals are wonderful to draw and paint. Agreed! I will.
ReplyDeleteDo you think that would be a good location for sketchers? I'm thinking of an animal location for this Thursday. I'm going to check out an alpaca farm on Crawford Road.
ReplyDeleteStunning, Kris! The colors are so beautiful together and the horses have such grace. Really wonderul.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lisbeth! He was very difficult to paint so I'm pleased with aspects of these. Trying to see his anatomy and get it right while working watercolor was a juggling act. His name is Rambo, but if you ask me, he's no Rambo. Far too lovely.
ReplyDeleteWhere are these beauties? I'd love to see them.
ReplyDeleteThere's only one and he's at Maxwelton Beach.
ReplyDeleteThese are all wonderful, but the first painting at the top is a special gem! It's so creative and daring of you to paint Rambo from that angle, and the way you made the head in a completely different color is so effective... I'm in awe of the way you did that!
ReplyDeleteThanks Katherine! You're sweet to say. He grazed for some time with his back to me so I concentrated on light and how it defined him. The sun was low and golden.
ReplyDeleteHi Kris

Thank you Jamila! I feel lucky to have sketched him. He was moved a couple days later to an inaccessible pasture.
