The Zen of Sketching

Sketching is meditative. It's a pleasure to calmly explore shapes, make marks on paper and see the beauty of a drawn line. The rest of the world falls away. Though this spread is not much of anything, when I look at it I recall the experience of creating it, the effort of trying to understand Zoey's structure and physical characteristics through drawing. I'm also reminded of my deep affection for her. It started as a small drawing of the chopping block and hatchet outside while I sat on the deck, then I was forced to go inside by rain. And there was Zoe.

  1. I understand completely the Zen-ness of drawing. One of my students last year, a boy with ADHD who happened to be a very good artist, told me that drawing was the only thing that calmed him down, and that's why he loved it so much. There is such a power in art... too much for my words to describe! Thanks for sharing your sketching experience. Nice dog!

  3. Yes, I agree, Katherine. Art has great power. Particularly to heal. It must be very interesting teaching kids art. They are generally unfettered by expectations and learning the "it should look like..." So you get to see their uninhibited art selves.
Thanks Katerine and Lisbeth, for your comments!
